Teaching Control Technology in the Primary Curriculum16 November 2011A head teacher from a primary school in one of the Northern Grid partner LAs recently asked about teaching Control Technology and what equipment was needed. Susie Arnott, who has worked with Northern Grid regularly over the last few years, has produced this helpful guide. For more information contact support@northerngrid.org or contact Susie by email susie.arnott@mac.com on Twitter @darktigerlily or via her website http://www.storywebs.co.uk Teaching Control Technology in the Primary CurricuumTeaching control technology starts in Early Years.Many Early Years settings will have lots of role play toys such as microwave ovens etc. that have buttons to start timers, noises etc. Old “real’ items, such as old mobile phones also offer opportunities for important play and talk. Adults should draw attention to the “cause and effect” of pressing buttons etc., and also discuss the control switches, dials etc. on real-life machines and gadgets. The most frequently seen “formal” equipment is the BeeBot which has a simple set of control buttons to make it move forwards, backwards, turn to right or left and make a sound. There are lots of accessories to add, such as additional shell tops to transform your BeeBot into a variety of different characters/colours, and play mats that encourage the planning of routes. The result of an 18 month project the videos show how ICT is about more than just computers and is more than a discrete subject. ICT provides tools to engage and support the development of pupils’ skills across the whole Early Years setting. With clear, informative videos of classroom practitioners focussing on: Animation, Role Play, Cross Curricular Uses, Digital Cameras, Visualisers and Tips for Getting started the DVD shows teachers how to explore new technology, integrate it into classroom practice and enhance teaching and learning. The examples show how ICT can support pupils to develop independence, communication and collaboration and shows that teachers with little confidence using ICT can become enthusiastic advocates of the use of ICT. Children’s Centre Leadership: Child Poverty An exploration of the range of strategies employed by Redcar Children's Centre in Teeside, aiming to alleviate child poverty. They use outreach such as trips to the local supermarket and home visits in order to encourage new parents into the children's centre. In addition there are one-to-one meetings with parents to offer advice on benefits and getting back into work.
Professional Knowledge: The Montessori Method At Gorton Mount Primary in Manchester, Headteacher Carol Powell has gained funding for Montessori training for her teachers and introduced the methods for Early Years and KS1. How are they combining the Montessori Method with their own working practice?

They were developed by The Northern Grid in collaboration with schools. The activities are easy to use and appropriate for individual, group and whole class teaching via an interactive white board. The original remit for the activities was to create small interactive applications in order to meet specific requests from teachers in the region. By creating the activities with Adobe Flash it is a relatively simple process to tailor and refine the applications following constructive feedback from teachers. You will need the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. A big thank you to Epinay School for their ideas and help in making these resources.
